Revisiting an Analogue Past?
After having an encounter on mlkshk.com over some Nick Cave ephemera, I decided to go digging though my old analog notebooks that date back to my years as a University student from the early ’80s to the ’90s. Boy are there some gems in there! A couple of things struck me about the process. Throughout the books are polaroids, made in a time when while expensive, still infinite in...

Robert Frank and photography: Art in the age of...
“…Julia Dolan, the Portland Art Museum’s photography curator, says digital technology may have many more people taking pictures but that doesn’t change what constitutes a photographer or a good photograph.  “It’s an issue of intention,” says Dolan. “That’s what separates us from Robert Frank. I can make a grocery list, for example, but that doesn’t...

Campaign to repaint Keith Haring mural grows
Keith Haring’s last surviving mural in Australia was painted at the Collingwood Technical College in 1984. Since then, the mural has gradually fallen prey to signs of old age, which sparked a campaign by Arts Victoria in 2010 to conserve the work. I wish all his work was restored, I remember one piece at Richmond station long since covered over by other street art and bill posters.

It's official, Kodak's on the way out
…”To all intents and purposes it is the end of the “Kodak moment”. More than 130 years after a “not especially gifted” high school dropout, George Eastman, founded the camera company that dominated photography for most of the 20th century, Kodak Eastman filed for bankruptcy protection in the US on Thursday. The company which once sold 90 per cent of the film...

Why people take photographs and what they do with...
As news of Kodak’s demise gains momentum one researcher in Western Australia asks where did Kodak go wrong? Where Kodak got it wrong was its perception that people were still taking photographs which they would then print. But this is increasingly no longer the case. From dedicated photo print shops to automated kiosks, Kodak persisted with this notion for longer than it should have. A...

Les Krims
Les Krims is a photographer I was introduced to many years ago as a student. He is still making work, whacky and wonderful, probing and silly. Usually I loathe flash based photographers sites, but once you turn off the sound it is worth having a look at his work.

Anonymous asked: I am referring to the fogged film photo - I am visualising it blown up on a wall. It is a beautiful abstraction. It is a work that speaks to the hidden corners of the heart. Your domestic scenes photo strikes similar chords.

Fogged Film
This is what real fogged film looks like. Note in this instance it has ruined a picture that in all likelihood I won’t be able to re-make for 12 months. The cost other than waiting so long for a re-shoot, $7.00 for the film and $3.00 for the ‘proof print’ making a total of $10.00. I’m still flabbergasted as to why these kinds of film effects are offered as filters to so...

Photographic Genres or The Importance of Being...
As is the norm, towards the end of 2011, there were lots of ‘photography related lists’ and the ‘year in reflection’ kind of post floating around in the blogosphere, something I steadfastly refuse to do. For me life is measured by far more important things than arbitrary numbers based on a somewhat flawed system. Life is measured for me in key moments, birth, death, marriage, not...

Skill, Craftsmanship & Time
Like just about anything else some of the coolest performances necessitate the greatest practice and skill.  One of the best lessons I learnt from my teachers, about the art and craft of photography was to “let go”; “make mistakes”. These mistakes only made you a better, keener observer, and more skilled at your ‘craft’.  Skill, craft, observation, these...

Toy Camera Collection
My lo-fi/toy camera collection is about to expand by 2 more cameras. I recently found  fourccornerstore.com and was impressed with the array of cameras on sale, so I bought two cameras. One a tiny usb sized camera, the other a small variant on the Vivitar cameras. This tiny usb camera boasts an incredible 1024 x 768 pixel sensor! From the folks who brought us the Biscuit camera comes the new...

Warring Impulses: Photography's Documentary and... →
From its inception, photography ignited debates about objectivity, artistry and, ultimately, authenticity: can a beautiful image also accurately capture a moment in time? Can a documentary photograph also be an object of thoughtful reflection? As Jana Prikryl explains in her article in The Nation’s Fall Books issue, Erosion: On Errol Morris, “photographs, first and last, freeze...

Before Photoshop allowed image makers to bend reality to their will with a single keystroke there was Jerry Uelsmann. He created surreal images the hard way — not with digital shortcuts, but working in a darkroom with seven enlargers and multiple negatives. Now that’s layers.

Where am I?
How did I get here? As someone who has been formally trained in the processes of fine art photography, [mainly black & white] to the point where I make my own film and paper developers and run very tight calibration systems, I for many years did not like my own colour work and had little confidence in it. After using a couple of smaller digital cameras including my phone cameras, I became...
